Details about this class
This is a web-based course that uses components of a flipped model. Having a web-based class means that we do all of our work asynchronously online (i.e., we do not meet face-to-face or have class Zoom sessions) while the ‘flipped’ aspect of the course means that you will have mini-assessments prior to submitting your weekly discussions.
Each week we have a short quiz (open book with two attempts), a main discussion post, and at least one peer response. In addition, there is one longer assignment that is broken into three components throughout the term. All work is done individually.
We have a free online textbook, and PowerPoint lecture notes are provided for all modules, so no cost for materials unless you choose to print something :) This is a 100% web-based course so you need a solid internet connection, a computer, and some kind of word processing software (Word and Google docs both work!).
Given the 100% online nature of this web-based course it is writing intensive--it's our only way to communicate with each other. Each week the discussion has a theoretical and an applied component so that we demonstrate our understanding of key concepts and also discuss how they are (or could be) operating in our lives. In-text citations, references, use of assigned materials, and application-based discussions are required because, well, ChatGPT is a thing now :) I'm looking forward to getting to know you through these short assignments! :)
Technology
For this class you will need internet access to complete work in our online classroom in D2L and access to Office suite (or the equivalent in Google docs) to complete the assignments and draft your discussion posts.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
