Details about this class
This course runs for 10 weeks.
I am excited to be teaching Math 58 this term, and I hope to make it fun and interesting as well as educational. If you are thinking of registering for my class but have any concerns that are not addressed here, feel free to email me; I would be happy to answer any questions.
The course will meet remotely using Zoom! You are expected to attend regularly, but our class meetings will be recorded and you can watch the recordings for attendance credit if you miss class.
Part of the goal of the Math 58 & 98 sequence is to help you develop a growth mindset. If you believe that some people are "math people" and others aren't, and there's nothing you can do to change it, that is a fixed mindset. With a growth mindset, you are more likely to take on a new challenge because you see it as an opportunity to improve. Instead of saying "I can't do this..." and giving up, you say "I can't do this... yet!" and keep working. Here's a 2-minute YouTube . and
I love teaching Math 58/98 remotely using Zoom. In Math 58 & 98 students are working together in small groups during our class meetings. You are expected to attend the online class meetings regularly and contribute productively to your group's work.
Proctored Exams: Our class will be participating in a Virtual Proctoring Pilot that is being run in collaboration with Math, Online Learning, and the Testing Center. The exams in this class will be proctored virtually in Zoom with me, your instructor, on the following dates and times:
- Exam 1 on July 29th from 6:00PM to 8:20PM using Zoom
- Exam 2 on August 28th from 6:00PM to 8:20PM using Zoom
Review the for important information and requirements. Please make every concerted effort to attend the scheduled virtually proctored exams. If you do not meet the requirements for virtually proctored exams, prefer to take your exams in-person, and/or have an unavoidable scheduling conflict, please contact me as soon as possible to discuss alternative arrangements. With adequate notice, alternative testing arrangements can be made for virtual or in-person proctoring at a testing center. Scheduling appointments with a testing center is the responsibility of the student, as well as paying any associated fees with using a non-不良研究所 testing center.
Please watch is a 7 minute video that applies to students in any subject area or grade level. This is the first, high quality offering on the Anyone Can be a Math Person Youtube channel. The video was created by Jessica Bernards and Wendy Fresh, Math faculty at Rock Creek.
If you have accommodations through Accessible Ed & Disability Resources at 不良研究所, please contact me so we can discuss your specific accommodations and how I can best support you.
If you have any questions or concerns about virtually proctored exams, please feel free to contact me.
Technology
We will use D2L Brightspace for some online components, with homework done in the online platform Connect Math. We will also use the spreadsheet program Google Sheets (or Microsoft Excel if you prefer). The free online graphing program Desmos will also be helpful. It is okay if you do not have a printer or scanner, but you may need to use a scanning app such as Adobe Scan to submit some handwritten assignments.
You MUST have a ALEKS account to do the online homework and quizzes. The class code you can use to self-register is: TBA. If you have a ALEKS Math account from previous Math 58, you can contact customer service. Note: You could avoid buying the textbook and purchase an access code directly from ALEKS for $75, because your ALEKS Math access does include an e-textbook. This could be a good option to use from your computer. However, in my opinion you will be better served by buying a print textbook as a workbook.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
Students with disabilities
Students with disabilities should notify their instructor if accommodations are needed to take this class. For information about technologies that help people with disabilities taking Online based classes please visit the Disability Services website.
