Hello!
I'm glad you're interested in taking Art 216: History of Photography with me this term. In this course, we'll start with a historical overview of photography and then get into several case studies of major photographic styles and genres. Some topics we'll explore include:
- connections between photography and changing technology,
- international photographic styles such as Pictorialism and Surrealism
- genres like landscape photography, social documentary, and street photography
The class is structured around weekly content modules and learning activities include discussion posts, short interpretive writing, creative assignments, and quizzes.
There is no required textbook to purchase for this class. All readings, articles, and videos will be provided in the weekly modules. To get a better feel for the class, please review a (while our syllabus will look a little different, the general info and outline of the course will be consistent) and a .
This is an asynchronous, fully online class that does not meet on Zoom.

For this fully online class, you will need a device (laptop, tablet, computer) and access to the internet in order to login to the course.
There is no special technology needed that is not listed in the Online Learning Technical Requirements.
