Hello!

I'm glad you're interested in taking Art 214: History of Graphic Design with me this term. In this course, we'll start all the way back with the advent of the printing press and move into contemporary design. All along, we'll be thinking about how design and technology intersect, as well as how graphic design impacts how we experience the world. Topics include:

• movable type and the dissemination of information
• major global design movements such as Art Nouveau, Modernism, and Postmodernism
• how design intersects with our contemporary lives and experiences

The class is structured around weekly content modules and learning activities include discussion posts, short interpretive essays, creative assignments, and quizzes.

There is no required textbook to purchase for this class. All readings, articles, and videos will be provided in the weekly modules. You can check out a SAMPLE syllabus from a previous quarter here: . (Our syllabus will look a little different, but this will hopefully give you a general feel.)

This is an asynchronous completely online class that does not meet on Zoom and has no (remote or in person) class meetings.

For this fully online asynchronous class, you will need a device (laptop, tablet, computer) and access to the internet in order to login to the course. 

There is no special technology needed that is not listed in the Online Learning Technical Requirements.
