Details about this class

The series Art 101, 102 and 103 meets requirements for art majors, general education and humanities for graduation or transfer (AAOT) and may be taken in any order.

Art 103 introduces aesthetic, historical, and critical issues of new media in the arts. We’ll look at the way artists have utilized new scientific, technological and intellectual developments to redefine and expand conventional art media. We’ll study the history and evolution of new media in the arts from the printing revolution of the 15th century to the digital revolution of today, focusing on photography, video art, film, performance and other forms of time based art. Throughout this course students will expand their critical thinking, research, writing, and visual communication, all integral life-skills that can enhance their future studies and career opportunities.

Course Format:

This is a fully remote/online, 8-week course. Each week, start by completing the required reading for the week and/or watching the assigned videos. The assigned readings and videos will give you a solid historical background for the material we will discuss on the discussion board. Discussion questions for the readings and videos are provided each week to help you take notes, learn the important vocabulary and concepts and build techniques for analyzing New Media Art.
