Details about this class
Are you curious about the backstory to scientific thinking? Are you confused by all the claims and counter-claims being tossed around these days in relation to scientific subjects? Is science a subject you've been avoiding, even though you need to take classes in it for your degree? Consider joining me in exploring "Science, Skepticism, and the Unknown."
What can you expect, if you take this class, beyond what the course description tells you? We will read and view a variety of materials, using those as the basis of discussions and other learning activities, to explore the nature of science and philosophical arguments that arise in the pursuit of science. Every week you will have some material from me to read or listen to, supplemented with articles and book chapters, videos and podcasts.
There are no materials to purchase for the class. Everything used in the course can be accessed through D2L Brightspace, including library and external resources to read and/or watch.
There are weekly discussions and short written assignments. We will be working together on a Community-Based Learning project related to science. The final "exam" consists of 2 essays--and you have about two weeks to complete the work. The syllabus for class will be similar to the .
The new material for each week opens on Monday, but isn't due until 1 p.m. the following Monday. And I have an automatic 24-hour grace period before any work is considered late. I'm happy to work with students who need time extensions or other accommodations.
If you'd like to know more about me, and my background, including my training in both science and philosophy, the information can be found on my website. I hope to see you in class.
Technology
As a fully online course, the only item you need is a device that can access the web. We may have an optional Zoom session, which could be accessed using a phone, if necessary.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
