Details about this class

Welcome!  Thanks for considering MTH 105 (Math in Society). This class explores ways that math is used in our everyday world that you may have not considered before.  We will examine how math is used in voting, home budgets, statistics, logic, and probability. I really enjoy teaching MTH 105 and look forward to working with you.

This section of MTH 105 is an online course.  We do not meet for regular class sessions each week.  You can choose what times during the day you work on assignments, but please note that this is not a self-paced class.  The course shell is structured to present the material in weekly modules and assignments are due each week.

For each class module you will watch lesson videos and complete class notes on the videos.  After completing the lesson videos and notes each week, you will practice the techniques from that lesson through graded homework (online homework with a free program called MyOpenMath that is integrated into our D2L shell as well as a short written homework assignment).  There will be one project on financial math near the end of the term.  This project can be completed on your own or with a partner from class.

Proctored Exams: Proctored exams are one of the many assessment tools used in MTH courses to assess student learning. For online sections, exams are primarily proctored virtually by the instructor in Zoom on dates/times scheduled by the instructor.  Our class will have two exams and one optional final this term.  The exams for this class will be proctored virtually by me (your instructor) on the following dates and times:

  • Exam 1:
    • Thursday, May 1st from 5:30pm to 8pm in Zoom or
    • Friday, May 2nd from 8:30am to 11am in Zoom
  • Exam 2:
    • Thursday, May 29th from 5:30pm to 8pm in Zoom or
    • Friday, May 30th from 8:30am to 11am in Zoom or
  • The optional final will take place during the first few days of finals week (June 9-11).  More details will be available during the term.

To have your exam proctored virtually, you must fully read and understand the , meet the technology/environment requirements, and demonstrate your ability to meet these requirements by meeting with me (the instructor) in Zoom for an appointment during the first two weeks of the term; technology support will not be provided on exam day.  Virtual proctoring was designed and piloted in collaboration between Math, Online Learning, and the Testing Center.

If you do not meet the requirements for virtually proctored exams, prefer to take your exams in-person, and/or have an unavoidable scheduling conflict, please contact me as soon as possible.  Alternative testing arrangements can be made for virtual or in-person proctoring at a testing center given adequate notice and depending on testing center capacity and availability.  Scheduling appointments with a testing center and communicating with the instructor is the responsibility of the student, as well as paying any associated fees with using a non-不良研究所 testing center.

If you have accommodations through Accessible Ed & Disability Resources at 不良研究所, please contact me so we can discuss your specific accommodations and how I can best support you.

If you are have a conflict with an exam date, please contact me to discuss options.  不良研究所 has testing centers that are open at alternate times that may work.

Technology

  • Access to a printer will be very useful in order to print weekly lesson outlines and written assignments.  If you don't have a printer, 不良研究所 has computer labs where you can print the documents.  In addition many public libraries have printing available.  (Please contact the instructor if you have concerns about printing to discuss options.)
  • Ability to scan written documents to pdf format using either a scanner or phone app is required.
  • Scientific calculator

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
