Details about this class
This course focuses on the final stages of media production—preparing, optimizing, and strategizing for distribution. Whether you are planning to release content through streaming platforms, film festivals, social media, or digital publications, this course will guide you through the steps of distribution planning, audience engagement, and industry best practices.
This is an online course only, hosted on D2L, with no regularly scheduled class meetings. Each week, you will engage with learning modules, hands-on activities, and structured planning exercises to help develop a comprehensive distribution strategy for a project.
Customized Learning Pathways for Digital Media DistributionTo make the course more flexible and applicable to different student goals, students will choose a pathway that best fits their project. This ensures everyone builds a relevant distribution plan that aligns with their focus.
- A personal project (a short film, multimedia piece, podcast, or documentary)
- A media campaign (an advocacy, marketing, or brand awareness campaign)
- A collaborative project you’re working on with a team or organization
Your final deliverable will be a fully developed distribution plan that outlines your strategy for releasing, promoting, and optimizing your project/campaign for the right platforms and audiences.
Note: You are not developing a creative project in this class; rather, you are building a professional-level distribution strategy for an existing or ongoing project.
By the end of this course, you will:
- Have a real, actionable distribution plan for your media project.
- Demonstrate how to optimize, market, and distribute media across different platforms.
- Be prepared to engage audiences, navigate licensing, and monetize your work.
This course is structured around unit-based lesson modules that include reading materials, videos, Discussion Boards, and six major assignments. These assignments progressively build toward your final distribution plan, helping you understand the distribution landscape, optimize your project for industry standards, and develop a strategic approach to reaching your target audience.
