Details about this class

MM 114 explores practices and perspectives in visual and multimedia storytelling methods including the use of media production tools and techniques such as cinematography, lighting, editing, sound, digital manipulation. This introductory course will teach students how these various tools are used to create cultural meaning, influence societies, and tell diverse personal stories. The course will present many examples of media (film, music, art, social media) and analyze how they are composed using visual, audio, and design techniques. Through historical and contemporary examples, we will learn how these tools have been used to both enforce oppressive paradigms and strive towards liberation. Students will also practice these techniques in creative projects using their smartphones and free media apps, as well as participate in technical demonstrations of multimedia production equipment, with the goal of honing students' agency and skills as storytellers.

Learning Outcomes

  • Define and compare how various forms of visual and sound media have been used to represent culture and society.
  • Evaluate the ways in which both historical and contemporary content creators have used visual and sonic media technology and techniques to present positive or negative portrayals of their subjects.
  • Create your own image, sound, and design projects that consciously use tools and techniques learned in class to be able to tell your own stories and those of your communities.

Students will be expected to attend the synchronous class meetings on Zoom.
For equity and access, I do not require students to have cameras on during class, but I do require students to be engaged in discussion and demonstrations of media examples as well as their own and their peers' work. Students may use Zoom's video, audio, chat text or any combination of these tools to be involved, but if they don't respond to requests for comment (which I give in advance) I will count them as absent.

If you have any questions or concerns about access, accommodations, or anything else, please email me.

This course is a wonderful entry point to the Multimedia Program. We will share lots of stories, and explore multimedia tools and techniques used to tell those stories effectively.

I'm excited for a productive and creative term!
