Details about this class
Course Description:
This is a bilingual (English & Spanish), online (via Zoom), 5-week ISA Arborist Exam Preparation Course for those who have the experience and qualifications to take the exam, but who might need more structure and support to help them feel ready to take the test.
It'll be a great companion course for those who are already studying, as we'll be reviewing about 3 chapters of the Study Guide per week, answering questions in class as the participants progress through the material.
Evaluations/grades for this class will be based on participation, not on test results. Class participants will include both current 不良研究所 students as well as industry professionals already working in the field.
Instructor:
Rachel Munzig (she/her)
Email: rachel.munzig@pcc.edu
Required Textbook:
[English] Arborists' Certification Study Guide, Fourth Edition by Sharon J. Lilly,
Corinne G. Bassett, James Komen, and Lindsey Purcell
[Español] Guía de Estudio de Certificación del Arborista, cuarta edición, por Sharon J. Lilly, Corinne G. Bassett, James Komen, y Lindsey Purcell
Textbooks can be purchased through the online (physical textbook $140; digital version $100) or the 不良研究所 Rock Creek Bookstore. They're often available to check out at your local library, too!
If purchasing the textbook creates a financial barrier for you, please email the Instructor about potentially borrowing a copy from the Landscape Technology Department. For 不良研究所 students, a copy of each textbook is on reserve at the Rock Creek Library (temporarily located in Building 3, upstairs in Room 225, at Rock Creek) to check out for a few hours at a time, and/or to scan pages for reference.
How this class works:
Each week we'll convene on Zoom to go over the chapters in the Study Guide assigned for that week. Participants will come prepared with any questions they might have, and/or areas they'd like to review.
This course will be taught in both English and Spanish. The Instructor will answer questions in the language that they were asked, and then translate both the question and response to the other language so everyone can benefit from the content. All written content on the slides will be in both languages, and both the English and Spanish digital textbooks will be shared on screen.
It is the participants’ responsibility to come prepared for class by having read the required readings (several chapters of the Study Guide per week). You will get out of this course what you put into it; the more prepared you are, the more you'll learn from each class session.
Description of evaluation criteria:
Evaluations (grades) for this course will be based on participation and engagement with the material. Each week we'll end class with a quick practice quiz – your grade will not be based on how well you do on the quiz, but on your completion of the quiz. The same goes for the Practice Test after class ends; you will be graded on your completion of the test, not the test results.
The class participation portion of the grade will be based on your engagement in the discussion during class; asking questions, sharing study tips and tricks, sharing your experiences, etc. will all count towards this portion of the grade.
For 不良研究所 students, the grade you earn will be based on: Completion of weekly quizzes 50%; Class participation 30%; Completion of practice test 20%
Before March 31st:
Before the first class session on March 31st at 4pm, please make sure that you 1) have a copy of the ISA Arborist Exam Study Guide, and 2) have read the first 3 chapters (Tree Biology, Tree Identification, and Soil Science).
Please email the Instructor (rachel.munzig@pcc.edu) with any questions!
