Details about this class

[This is a fully online, asynchronous course]

Children’s literature is easily (and often) dismissed as lacking in intellectual content. This course begins with the contrary assumption that children’s literature poses some of the most fundamental questions that adults, as well as children, have to consider. We will study a range of classic and contemporary texts (fantasy, dystopia, talking animals all included!), concentrating on questions concerning the nature of the human: How do different eras and authors define what it means to “grow up”? Why is literature for children so often about violence and death? What is the role of children’s literature in preserving, challenging, and passing on social and historical knowledge? What does children’s literature teach us about how and what it means to be a member of a community or a society?
