Details about this class
This course meets gen ed social science requirements at 不良研究所 and is accepted by PSU as a linguistics course.
Are you interested in the interconnection of language and culture? This course covers topics such as folktales, songs, and the power of storytelling as well as how language shapes gender identity, politics, and world view in cross cultural perspective. Each week you will complete required readings, post to a discussion forums and take multiple choice quizzes to test your comprehension of class readings, online lectures, videos and other course materials. In addition, you will write two short papers. The first one focuses on rewriting a traditional folktale in your culture from a different perspective and the second one analyzes how love songs from different cultural eras challenge or reinforce gender roles and values. There is also one multiple choice comprehensive final exam.
