Details about this class
Communication requirements: Students are not required to be proficient in American Sign Language or even know how to sign at all. This course is open enrollment for anyone and there will be two American Sign Language interpreters for every class. Logistics regarding communication between the class and the deaf instructor will be covered during the first week of class.
Required Text(s) and Materials: Deaf Culture: Exploring Deaf Communities in the United States; Irene W. Leigh, Jean F. Andrews & Raychelle Harris; Plural Publishing, San Diego, CA, Second Edition
You can purchase a paper copy at the bookstore or receive access to the FREE e-book on D2L. The e-book and lecture slides are available to students on the first day of class.
Zoom requirements: Students are required to have their cameras on throughout the Zoom sessions for attendance and student engagement. Students should be able to see the instructor, the interpreters, and the other students on Zoom. Students need to be able to screenshare, turn on/off the captions, mute/unmute, type in comments/share links in the Zoom chat, understand how to select the Gallery view option, how to move the boundary between the shared screen and participant videos to view the shared screen better, and know how to join breakout rooms for partner/group activities on Zoom.
Attendance requirements: Attendance is required because we will meet on Zoom live for all classes. Students are permitted two unexcused absences without penalty. After the third absence, a student’s final grade will be deducted one letter grade. Students whose webcams are turned off during class sessions will be marked as absent.
Technology
Technical requirements: Students need guaranteed and reliable access to high-speed Wi-Fi/Internet, a laptop/computer, and a webcam for Zoom classes. D2L Brightspace is an online course management system that is used for online classes. Students will access the syllabus, email, course announcements, course materials, coursework, and Zoom on D2L for this course.
Note: A phone or other personal electronic device that is not a laptop or computer is not recommended. Students need to be able to screenshare their screen and see everyone in Gallery view which is best on a laptop or a computer screen.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
