Details about this class
Welcome to Digital Tools! My name is Mary Anne Funk, and I'm your instructor for this section of the course.
In this class, you will learn the fundamentals of how to use Adobe Photoshop and Animate as the primary digital tools in addition to exploring and testing other digital media tools that help us create digital art/media. Through small workshops and assignments centered around understanding the software, students will be able to pursue a personal project focused on software that they have learned from this class.
Through hands-on projects, in-class topics, and digital media sharing, we’ll explore approaches to digital illustration, animation, and time-based media while building foundational technical skills and creative strategies.
We will focus on:
- Digital Illustration & Compositing – Create layered compositions using scanned, photographic, or drawn elements.
- Animation & Motion – Experiment with frame-based and timeline-based techniques to explore movement in visual design.
- Sound & Visual Narratives – Develop short-form media projects that incorporate imagery, sound, text, or sequencing to explore mood and meaning.
- Accessibility in Digital Design – Practice incorporating captions, alt text, and thoughtful descriptions into your work as part of inclusive creative practices.
- File Management & Workflow – Learn how to organize digital projects, manage file types, and prepare work for critique or presentation.
- Contemporary Practice – Study examples from artists and designers who use digital tools in unexpected or impactful ways. By the end of the course, you’ll have completed a collection of digital works that demonstrate your ability to work conceptually and technically across a range of formats.
