Details about this class

This WEB-based class is asynchronistic; students can work on weekly readings, discussion posts, and quizzes anytime.  Every week a new topic related to the Portland Zoning Code, or the Oregon Residential Specialty Code (ORSC) will be presented in slides, with reference to specific tables and sections of the codes.  Students can access both the Zoning and the ORSC online, free of charge.  Every Monday morning, a new set of slides (and a pre-recorded video) are available.  After reviewing the slides and video, a quiz and a discussion post will be due by Sunday evening of that week.  There will be a midterm exam, a final exam, and a Term Project - which requires implementing Zoning and Building Codes into the design of a small ADU.

Technology

This class is WEB-based, online class, with prerecorded lectures, readings, projects, and examples (there no "live" zoom calls).  Students simply need have use of a computer and internet several times per week to access the class information and the online zoning codes.  Course files are generally in pdf format; however a term project at the end of the terms requires filling in a word document.  The term project also requires a simple drawing or sketch of a small residential ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit), which can be done with either the CAD tool of your choice (AutoCAD, Revit, Chief Architect, or other), or a scan/photo of a hand drafted or hand sketched solution.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
