This course spans 11 weeks and will be Remote on Wednesdays from 2 pm to 2:50 pm. The dates of the class are April 2, 2025 – June 11, 2025.
The assignments are due at the beginning of each class. While optional, it is crucial to offer some individual live Zoom sessions to get to know each other better. Scheduling these sessions can be challenging due to various scheduling needs. If you’re interested in scheduling a Zoom meeting, please reach out to me via text at 360.334.2626. Please include your name followed by AD 106 or “BPLs” (Baby Pink Lungs) in the message. I will do my best to respond within 24 – 48 hours Monday through Friday.
The course provides an overview of addiction to nicotine products, as well as evidence-based practices that have been shown to be effective in supporting successful cessation of smoke and chew use. The course also covers current information on vaping trends and some of the known health risks to date. Prerequisites for this course include WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit option is available.
Throughout the 11-week term, you will have the opportunity to:- Learn and practice evidence-based brief interventions that have been proven effective in helping individuals reduce or stop their tobacco and nicotine use.
- Apply what you learn each week by inviting a person to explore their relationship with these products to help you pass your class!
- Demonstrate your understanding of the course material through completed assignments and DAP (Data, Assessment, and Plan) notes.
- Present a final assignment that showcases your chosen person’s vision of their relationship with tobacco and nicotine products based on practices and what they learned from you.
Disclaimer: This class is experiential in nature and focuses on tangible practices and outcomes. With 480K people dying each year from tobacco related illnesses, it is evident that tobacco/nicotine use affects us all. This means that ALL ARE WELCOME and NEEDED – current, former, and those who have never used nicotine products. Everyone’s participation and contributions are valuable because use impacts us all and the world, we are honored to live in. Please be prepared to share tears for lives lost and celebrate with heartfelt smiles and laughter as we work together towards empowering individuals to reconnect with their Baby Pink Lungs and Gums!
By the end of this course, you will be able to:- Apply your knowledge of addiction to tobacco/nicotine products to deliver accurate information to individuals and/or groups.
- Understand and deliver evidence-based nicotine cessation strategies to assist in nicotine cessation and harm reduction efforts.
- Compile a list of practices and resources that can be used as a referral source for individuals who currently use nicotine (chew, smoke, vape).
Another main goal of this learning experience is to increase our confidence in inviting individuals to explore their relations with tobacco and/or nicotine products. This objective is of paramount importance!
